Challenge yourself with some new moves
Circuit classes not only provide a fantastic cardio workout, but they also incorporate resistance exercises to help develop muscular strength/endurance. With just a mat and some hand weights, they’re easy to do in the comfort of your own home, in the garden or even the local park.
Below is an example circuit of moves that will challenge your entire body head to toe!
Equipment required: hand weights & a mat (try to go no lower than 2kg per weight, and use the heaviest load that enables you to feel tired by the end of the allotted time).
Time: 30 seconds per exercise with a 10 second active rest* period between each.
- Mountain Climber
- Press up
- Squat jumps
- Upright rows
- Russian twists
- Shoulder press
- Trunk curls
If you’re already fairly fit and want to ramp the exercises a level or you’ve been doing the above circuit and at the end of the allotted time you no longer feel like you are pushing it then try these adaptions:
- Mountain Climber for 6, plus 2 jumping jacks
- Elevated press-up (feet on a step or box)
- Plank plus leg extensions
- Weighted Squat jumps
- Upright rows into shoulder press
- Weighted russian twists
- Burpees plus 2 jumps
- Shoulder press into lateral raise
- Weighted trunk curls
Struggling to motivate yourself?
If you’re not able to motivate yourself or prefer to be in a group then try and get a group of friends to join in. By organising a time you can all meet makes it less likely you’ll not turn up. If others are relying on you to be there, it’s harder to come up with excuses!
Alternatively you can come along to one of the be.fit circuit classes. They run on Wednesdays 9:15am (term time) and Thursdays 6:15pm.
be.fit tip: Sometimes it’s hard to push yourself when there’s no one shouting at you to work harder. Try listening to music with a fast tempo and keep your moves in time the beat. Also try changing it up after a few sessions so it doesn’t start to feel monotonous.
*active rest can simple be moving from one station to the next or walking on the spot.
